The Supremacy of Jesus Christ - Part 1

Speaker: Steve Bice Series: Colossians: The Glory of Christ Topic: Colossians Scripture: Colossians 1:15–1:17

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” (Colossians 1:15–20 ESV)

The passage that we’ve come to in our series in Colossians is the most famous in the entire letter. It’s considered one of the Christological high points of the entire New Testament - a place where we see the glories of Jesus Christ clearly defined.

John Newton, the author of Amazing Grace,” once wrote:

What think ye of Christ? is the test;

to try both your state and your scheme;

You cannot be right in the rest

unless you think rightly of him

If you get Jesus wrong you get everything wrong. Why? Because at the very heart of the gospel, the good news, at the very core of Christianity itself, is Jesus Christ. So what you think about Jesus, what you believe about Jesus isn’t a side issue…it’s absolutely vital, pivotal, and central.

The question, then, that must be answered is “Who is Jesus?” Not “who is Jesus to you?” But simply “Who is Jesus?” This is a question that each one of us need to answer. Life and death hang in the balance.

In this sermon we begin to unpack the anwer to that important question.
